Skills and Skill Groups


The backbone of this system are the skills, for without them a character is mostly just a name and some numbers that can't really do anything helpful. The skills a character has represents the things they have learned to do, trained in, and are able to perform. All in all they represent the experience the character has had through their life so far. The full rules of how to use skills are found in the Game Mechanics section.

This is a rather comprehensive list of skills, covering the common ones found all over Karn. When other areas of the world are expanded on (like in the full rules that cover the Senton Kingdom), they will have new skills and skill cost changes included with them. This allows the lists to have costs and availability of groups based on the local area and what skills are common there. The skill costs in this book are generic and used only for the Basic Version (as they have no area of Karn connected to them).

Parts of the Skill List
The skill list is made up of many parts and each of them requires a little explanation. In addition to the columns of the list, there are a number of other symbols and elements explained here.

Column Breakdown
The skill list is broken down into four columns, mostly only used during skill selection and character creation. The following are descriptions of each of the columns from left to right.

Cost
This column lists the Creation Point (CP) costs of buying the skill or group during character creation. These costs are also be used as a base when spending ESP or CSP to learn new skills.

Starting Info
This column is mainly used to list the starting percentage level for skill purchased at character creation time. Other starting levels for some non-percentage skills are also listed here, but most of the time notes about the listings will be placed here. These notes are most common with groups, sub-groups, and special types of skills.

Skill or Group Name
This column lists all the skills (which are organized into various groups and sub-groups), as well as the groups themselves. There are also a number of notes found here used mainly for character creation.

Maximum
This column lists the maximum level the skill can reach through any normal means. Usually this is based on one or more of the characters attributes, so they are different for each character. Without magic no character can ever exceed these (but they can be above 95%).

Groups and Sub-Groups
Groups contain lists of skills that (at least in some way) belong together. Although groups are not skills themselves they usually have some inherent knowledge or contacts associated with them (and often some free skills). Some groups are also contained within other groups (these are called sub-groups) and they can't be bought until the group that contains them has been.

Listed in the Starting Info column is the group type information for each group and sub-group. Base Groups are the only ones that can be learned or purchased directly without any other groups or skills needed. Sub-Groups are listed with numbers to easily separate how deeply nested they are. Ones that are listed as "Sub-Group 1" only require the parent "Base Group" to be learned first. Ones that are listed as "Sub-Group 2" require their parent "Sub-Group 1" and "Base Group" to be learned first. And so on.

Prerequisites
Some skills require other skills or information before they can be purchased or learned. These are called Prerequisites and can not be skipped or ignored. If a skill has any prerequisites, they are listed after the skill name in the skill description section after the list. To make it easier on you when choosing skills, the ones that have a prerequisite have been marked with an asterisk "*" after the cost of the skill on the list.

For example: The Writing skill (which allows someone to write with style) has a prerequisite of any Literacy skill. Basically, you have to know how to read and write before you can learn to write poetry or other methods of style.

Some skill groups include a free skill or two that normally have a Prerequisite. These skills are usually included with the required skills listed in the Prerequisite of the skill. If for some reason they do not include the needed skills, the group will require you take the needed skills before you can use that free skill.

Multiple Costs
Some skills are listed with multiple costs separated by a slash "/". These are usually explained in the sections dealing with types of skills they are, but are relatively rare. This mostly found when dealing with things like magic.

Cumulative Purchase Skills
These are skills or bonuses that can be taken more than once, but do have some other kind of limit. Each time they are taken they increase whatever they effect by the listed amount but can not be used to push those limits above their maximums (even if purchased from different areas of the list). These are ones that have a plus "+" after their cost on the list.

Basic Version Skill List
This is the complete list of skills you can choose from for this Basic Version of the game. This is a rather comprehensive list of skills and groups, but is by no means everything that can include. The full version of the game has several more skill groups and dozens of skills not found here. It also adds another level of complexity to skills with area specific and training specific sub-skills (allowing areas of specialized study within a given skill).

The descriptions for all these skills are found in the next section (as this one will be long enough already). If you are unsure about anything dealing with a skill (such as what the prerequisites are), you can look it up in that section for all the details.
